REAL WELLBEING: Skin Health - Rejuvenation
One of the first things many of us notice when we meet someone new is a person’s complexion, but did you also know that what we see on the surface of the skin is a reflection of what is happening inside the body?
In Chinese medicine, we believe that skin elasticity and texture can be improved by replenishing blood with a healthy diet; encouraging the circulation of qi, our life-force energy; and nurturing calm, feminine yin. The skin is a barometer that reflects the condition of our internal organs that are affected by every aspect of our lifestyle including diet, exercise, and sleep. Healthy skin is not only about looking good—it is also about staying healthy!
Skin inflammation can be reduced by avoiding alcohol, refined sugar, caffeine, and processed fatty foods. Replenish blood and qi with goji berry tea; nourishing smoothies made with soy milk, walnuts, and black sesame seeds can also be helpful. If you have acne, brown spots, or itchy skin, whip up a juice containing celery, tomato, pear, and lemon.
Exercise increases blood and oxygen flow to skin cells, and carries away free radicals and other waste. For bright, healthy skin, set aside the hours between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. for restorative yin beauty sleep. Remember that skin cell turnover requires 30 to 40 days, so whatever positive changes you make now, will take some time to become evident.
