Pineapple for Allergies
Tropical pineapple packs a punch when it comes to healing properties. This month I chose pineapple because it contains a rich supply of bromelain, an enzyme that has anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show that bromelain inhibits the development of allergic airway disease and asthma; it can reduce nasal swelling and make it easier to breathe. Bromelain has been studied in comparison to prescription NSAID anti-inflammatories like Celebrex and the results were impressive—both therapies gave excellent relief, but even in high doses bromelain had virtually no side effects—making it a viable for long-term use in the relief of arthritis and other chronic inflammation.
Delicious tropical pineapples are also rich in digestive enzymes that tenderize meat and aid in the absorption of protein, so you can cook animal protein along with pineapple slices to create a tender, easily digested dish. Frozen pineapple chunks go well in smoothies and dehydrated fresh pineapple makes a great snack—dehydrate fresh pineapple while it is in season and add it to trail mix along with nuts and seeds for year-round enjoyment, but especially during springtime to help keep allergies at bay.
